COLLABORATING FOR SUCCESS ON PARCC AND AP

Thank you to all CHEC teachers and LEAP Leaders for a dynamic professional developent day focused on collaboration across disciplines. The plans and commitments all departments made to focus on reading and writing to PARCC or AP prompts, will provide our students with the tools they need to approach any assessment with success.

During this week, all teachers will be teaching a lesson on deconstructing a prompt. This is a critical skill of reading and analysis, and will serve students well not only in the upcoming tests, but in tests and work situations they face in the future. A prompt is a scenario, with a task embedded. In order to tackle a prompt, or a set of directions, or a work assignment, or even navigate on line instructions, the reader must be able to analyze and understand the prompt.

After the lesson on deconstructing the prompt, outlining, and producing a written response, all classes should engage in exposing students to exemplars of level 4 and 5 (PARCC), or equivalent AP samples, and have them interact with the rubric so that they can see and analyze what grade level or above writing looks like. This transfers the power of analysis, assessment and revision to the students, and makes the rubric a tool that they can use independently to analyze and improve their own work.

Finally, all classes should provide a lesson in whih students will engage in analyzing and evaluating their own work, using the rubric, and revising it to meet the standard as they now understand it.

Once students and teachers beccome accustomed to this process of tranferring the power and responsibility of analysis and assessment to students, the impact on student ownership of the process of improvement will become the norm in class. In turn, this shifts the role of the teacher to creating the environment for cognitive lift,  self assessment, revision, and independent grappling with the work.  (EP 3, 4, 5).

Again, thank you to all for your commitment to this process. As students are exposed to the process in all of their content matter, they will internalize it as a way of learning.





PROGRESS REPORTS DUE

Progress report marks are due in Aspen this Wednesday. The window has opened, and we'll need to make sure that each student has a letter grade and also at least one comment. If you'd like to bring the grades from your current T3 gradebook directly over to the progress reports column, you can follow these directions:

1. Make sure you drag the "grade columns" bar down to "post columns - progress"
2. Go to "options" in the upper left and select "update post columns"
3. Select "Term 3" and "progress reports"
4. Select to update from "Average: Term 3"

SPORTS UPDATE - LAST WEEK'S RESULT

Congratulations to our high school girl’s basketball team for making the championship. The girls defeated Coolidge and Wilson in the playoffs last week. The championship will take place at UDC on Wednesday at 6:00. The high school bowling team lost to Anacostia.

CHEC’S DEBATE TEAM CONTINUES TO EXCEL

I'm happy to report that during Saturday's WUDL February Debate, held at CHEC, CHEC's teams won four of their six matches, and our own Adam Temesgen (a first time debater) won first place as an individual speaker!

LIBRARY NEWS

The CHEC Librarians are back and the libraries are open! Thanks so much to everyone for working around the libraries being closed. Rest assured, this week all those papers can be printed, work finished, and books checked out. You too could meander down to the library to explore the collection. Whether you are looking for resources to complement your units or want something for your own independent reading, you’ll be sure to find a wide variety of books from which to choose.

Congratulations to the 7th grade team, and specifically Mr. James Cisneros. The 7th grade students have had the highest number of books checked out per student since the beginning of the year for all grades 6-12. Mr. Cisneros works with Ms. Falkenberg to schedule regular book checkout times, which has benefited the students greatly. Keep up the good work 7th grade!

Canvas Update – Having trouble incorporating authentic speech into our class content? Canvas can help! Canvas has a discussion feature that can allow students to post responses to prompts and reply to their classmate’s posts. This feature allows the teacher to set it up in a number of ways in order to facilitate the best classroom discussion possible. Furthermore, students and teachers can post diverse content (pictures, videos, links, etc) which allows students to further tap into the resources available to them. JUNIOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Baha’i-sponsored junior youth classes, is open to everyone regardless of their beliefs, help teach spiritual, moral and ethical decision-making skills. Facilitated by Animators (Bell students) junior youth classes empower the development of inner transformation based on an altruistic sense of higher purpose. Encouraging idealistic as well as practical goals.

OPPORTUNITIES AND UPDATES
The Leadership Team will continue to meet every other Wednesday this year, and the Academic Leadership Team (ALT) will meet every other Wednesday. The ALT met last Wednesday, February 14, and our next ALT/Leadership Team meeting will be Wednesday, March 1, 2017. At this meeting, we will continue and complete mapping out LEAP seminars and department meeting agendas for the next advisory. The notes and minutes from all meetings are available on the CHEC Portal. The Academic Leadership Team is a group of teachers, counselors, and administrators who meet every other week to discuss school needs, and plan for improvements. The Leadership Team designs the school’s comprehensive school plan, and helps in its implementation. Please consider joining the Leadership Team this year. It is open to all faculty and staff. We need the involvement and voices of all. Remember, Leadership team meetings are open to all who are interested in schoolwide decision-making and leadership. You can come once, or as many times as you like, but please make your voice heard!

BUDGET SEASON HAS BEGUN
All schools have received their initial budget allocations for School Year 2017-2018. We will be having a series of meetings of stakeholders, including the LSAT, teachers, students and parents, to gain their input on budget priorities for next year. The schedule of meetings will be sent in a separate email.

CLIMATE
We have started the new semester, and for most teachers, this means a new set of student. Please plan to build relationships with your new students, and to build relationships among students as well. Please draw upon the strategies our PGT shared at our last faculty meeting, as well as the Restorative Circles we have learned about. Remember our goal of consistency so that students experience consistent expectations and support. Please also remember our shift to Restorative Justice. Use CHAMPS and PBIS to support your classroom climate! INVITE MS. CAMPBELL TO YOUR CLASS DOJO SO THAT SHE CAN HIGHLIGHT YOUR GREAT PBIS WORK.

The Deans will be chairing the School Climate and Culture Team. Please join to make your voice heard on the School Climate and Culture.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please do not cover up the windows to your classroom or office doors. This should only be done in the event of an active shooter drill or event. Other than that, it is a safety hazard to cover the windows. Administrators will be checking on this periodically and asking maintenance to remove any windows that are covered.

THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Cross Curriculum Mind-Body Connection. Get your students MOVING!!
Wanted to share with you a way to start a class that gets kids up and moving (PE), while working on Literacy Standards (ELA) and simultaneously satisfying the need to work across subject areas (Math, Science, History, Art, etc..). I've included some examples of photos that will work, but you can choose anything that relates to your subject matter - or let your students find pictures themselves. The point: Getting kids up and moving helps engage more brain cells which will turn on more brain power when they have to sit down and focus at their desks. This also benefits each teacher as it strengthens EP 1, 3 & 4 AND it's fun.

A variety of pictures that have a person in a posed position
Goals & Objectives
Students will be able to:

  • Use only verbal communication to get the group to recreate a picture.
  • Demonstrate the poses in the picture.
Activity
Students will work in small groups and select a group leader.
1. Provide each group leader with a picture. The picture is a secret and should not be shown to the group.
2. The leader will use descriptive language to get the group into the same pose as the picture. The leader may not use gestures or other forms of nonverbal communication.
3. When the group has been successful, select a new leader and picture.
